Powell condemned parliamentary colleagues who called the Mau Mau “sub-human”. An opinion poll carried out shortly after the speech showed that 74 percent of the population agreed with Powell, but the government ignored their wishes and immigration continued. It is important to be alive to the contemporaneous context of Powell’s speech, particularly language that as a result of evolving semantics has become hard for us to judge in accordance with twenty first century standards.
