Walkthroughs, selected scenes from various games (cutscenes, cinematics etc), gameplay highlights or montages. It's an extremely effective choice. Sometimes you just want the ambiance; sometimes you want in on the players' thought process.

Example 2 if you're super talented at editing, I'd suggest doing some short OCE's in CoD or CS GO.

It isn't. Another example would be telltale games, although there are some sections without any dialogue which can get boring without commentary. So you think it's not a good idea to upload videos without commentary?
Hey, I'm working on a Let's Play without commentary to get me started gently on the YouTube scene. It would make the channel look weird if you got tons of views and subs with say... comedy skits.. and then abandon that once you have enough to get partnered and start doing lets plays.

Do not ever base your actions on what other people have got away with. Sure, there's a market for those but the commentary is what will easily distinguish you from the thousands upon thousands uploaded daily. There`s is a few games that don`t need a license to monetize e.g. No stalls or unsurity.
You will only have gamers watching that are specifically interested in that one game you are showcasing.
That being said, such an LP would have to be perfectly executed.
Isn't that a main requirement to be allowed to cover game footage for some game companies?
I have done that before, just uploading highlights, and I've gotten a few 10s of views.

Yes, youtube may think it's reused or that someone reuploaded it but it is overall a MISUNDERSTANDING. Example 1 can just be a really be clips you've collected through playing and then editing in captions/memes in them to make it more appealing.

If you have a new Nvidia card you can use Shadowplay to record the last 1 to 10 minutes of gameplay. These games have a way of speaking for themselves, if the LPer chooses. Also Telltale games.

how can a YouTube "Let's Play" channel work without commentary? Based on uploading my first episode I can tell you it should be fine, YouTube basically said to me that the video (of Fallout: New Vegas) has copyright material, that I can still upload it but it will have ads from the copyright owners.
