I don’t feel like that’s made as explicit in the cartoon, in which they still like to eat cats, but don’t seem to be eating kids. At points I found myself confused about where they were, or the scene jumped suddenly without warning. They don't really need to be reminded of things ALL OF THE TIME, and not verbatim, at least not in my experience. I'm a young adult and i thought before i read this "Ughhh its going to be like all the other books i read". He’s still the fat friend in the book, but it felt that he’s given a little more dignity and empathy there. I don't care how old your target audience is, don't insult their intelligence. Its spasmodic style meant some parts were mildly confusing, but the narrative was always coherent enough to understand and allow progress to the next page.
There are many twists and turns that truly kept you engaged and shocked with each twist.
Not much better than spirit animals but good. I think that Troll Hunters by Micheal Dahl was a pretty good book. It was okay.
The young heroes will also discover their own untapped celestial abilities in an epic battle between good versus evil. Soon Jim has to team up with a band of unlikely (and some un-human) heroes to battle the monsters he never knew existed. In fact, Zak takes on the form and persona of a great silver bear. BUT, the illustrations are gorgeous and fit super well with the story. Plus, there’s the tinge of horror because you know what happened to all of those kids who vanished 45 years ago, assumed kidnapped. Good fantasies at this intermediate reading level are really hard to find. Interesting and fairly original. I know this is middle grade, but middle grade readers are smart. It has a good mixture of real life situations and fantasy. In the first episode of the show, Jim finds this mysterious amulet on the way to school one day—it was calling his name. It was a good idea. (The romantic subplot in the book isn’t that much more sophisticated than the shows, though.). The writing style is pretty smile and is a pretty easy read. I'm not sure what age group this one is intended for. Trollhunters by Guillermo del Toro is a creative fantasy filled with adventure and suspense.
I would plop this book between Secrets of Droon and Beast Quest in reading level for fantasy lovers out there.

The amulet is what gives him that shiny armor and the big sword, and you get to see the gears and wheels turning and clicking when it goes into action. At least in most parts. I suppose it makes sense: the YA book market is strong and growing, but I don’t see as many fantasy cartoons that are made for teens and up. I think that Troll Hunters by Micheal Dahl was a pretty good book. Overall, I think if you want the heavier dose of del Toro’s horror, the book is going to be more satisfying, but it’s definitely not one I’d recommend for younger kids.
