i heard harleys only last for about 50,000 miles---cant be!? . . AMF started the ball rolling on the EVO, and once it was in production, it took many people a good while to warm up to it, then once they had a good, no great engine, they change it all over. Would I buy another?

Your Sporty shares tranny & primary oil. You have to remember you are dealing with a motor that has the same basic design as it did in the very early 1900’s and they are still going strong. Harley has updated other parts of the Sportster, most notably the transmission and motor mounts, resulting in some corresponding engine tweaks along the way.

Does anyone know if Castrol makes a good motorcycle Syn oil that would be good for Harleys? In 1999, it was replaced by the Harley-Davidson Twin Cam 88in the Touring and Dyna model and in 2000 in the S… I barely passed the CMSP (California MSF). It was made in the 1,340 cc (82 cu in) displacement for Harley-Davidson Big V-twins bikes, replacing the Shovelhead engine until 2000 when the last EVO was placed in a production factory custom FXR4 (FXR2 and FXR3 were the first CVOs). Yes way, I have never done a topend in it and my goal is to reach a minimium of 220,000 miles before I do any major work. yeah watch the heat!

Easy for me to remember. The Evolution engine on Harley's 1100 models has a larger bore --- at 3.4 inches --- and the same 3.8-inch stoke.
In 1986, Harley-Davidson upgraded the Sportster with the newly designed Evo engine, replacing the Ironhead that had become a staple of the Sportster since its inception. Switch to good synthetic oil @5000 miles. As an owner/rider of several different HD motorcycles -over the years, the currently built motorcycle from Harley-Davidson is a solid machine. It can be found in Harley-Davidson's 883, 1100 and 1200 XLH Sportster models. i didnt have this issue but i have a water cooled bike. Because of the similarities, many people choose to upgrade their 883 Sporty with custom Harley parts to 1200 cc. Only the rear cylinder and all parts related to it had to be replaced. Replaced base gaskets two years ago and the cylinders still had nearly 100% crosshatching visible, and almost no deposits on valves & heads.
