The story isn’t just mom and son arguing every day, which is the typical scenario I encounter in similar setups. If I missed something, I’d be happy to stand corrected because, beside that “detail”, the story sounds incredibly compelling.
It is easily one of the finest collection of stories I’ve ever read so far. Whether it’s fantasy, sci-fi, magical realism, noir thriller, or historical fiction, The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories has them all. Houston — didn’t have a PROBLEM finding it. Could have been a slow year for awards. by p0190438. I’ve been enjoying these short story reviews … and this one garnered a [x] genius – I usually start with what I call the negative-first draft. That would be an explanation for her inability to communicate with her son.
It’s almost like they know what you’re up to. Not like a writer trying to manipulate your emotions. Will respond with my thoughts on the story and Carson’s review later.
This letter hit on some of those things, but it wrapped them around two key choices that elevated the letter beyond your typical “end of movie letter moment.” The first was she told the story of her childhood. That’s also a big reason why we’re turning the pages. Just my two cents. But the stuff with the mother (especially the fact that he couldn’t communicate, and therefore relate to her) adds another, and substantial, emotional layer. That part sort of depends on the short story format. The Paper Menagerie is a very quick 15 or so page read about a young man's relationship with his mother. 15 pages long, just within 15 pages, Ken Liu has created something that’s truly emotional, important, and mesmerizing. Ken Liu did a fantastic job on translating The Three-Body Problem and Death’s End, the first and third book in The Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy by Cixin Liu. But where Paper Menagerie separates itself from the 10 million other stories that have also tried and failed to make you weep, is this “strange attractor” in the origami animals.
Thanks! Because of this, immediately after I finished reading The Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy by Cixin Liu, I knew that I must also read Ken Liu’s original stories.
It would be harder to convince the audience that they didn’t find more ways to communicate. I’m a Chinese born and raised in Indonesia, and I grew up learning about all three Chinese, Indonesian, and Western cultures and languages due to my upbringing, environment, and education. I challenge anyone to read this story and not start bawling from the get-go. I understand how difficult it can be to learn and adapt to different cultures and languages, especially on an everyday basis; I’m still learning up to this day, and I will always continue to do so. But I found it interesting that Liu reversed the typical roles in this kind of story. Few were memorable.
