In December 1934 Ascania rescued the crew of the sinking cargo ship SS Unsworth in mid-Atlantic. The following months were equally eventful for the Ascania. She left again for Canada on the 10th September that year. The hulk floated until the last day, when the remains of the engine room compartment, probably 300 tons, was removed at low tide. and sent to Newport for demolition, arriving there on 1 January 1957. The boat managed to reach the Usworth and take off the remaining nine crew members.
Perfect setting in which to enjoy, with healthy appetite that Atlantic air creates, the expert cookery of Cunard chefs, is the “Ascania’s” First Class restaurant. In the corner was a cosy alcove, for writing letters undisturbed. She was the only ship of the Cunard ‘A’ Class to return to the company’s service and three months later, on the 20th December 1947, she made her first post-war voyage, from Liverpool to Halifax. In 1 July 1938 the Ascania had left Quebec and was travelling down the St. Lawrence River with a cargo of bullion when it struck the submerged Alcide Rocks, near Bic Island. He boarded his ship Ascania at Kingston harbour, then sailed out into the Caribbean Sea for his long journey to Southampton.
It arrived the following morning along with the Beaverhill, a Canadian Pacific vessel, and began searching for wreckage and survivors. Even the first class cabins were fitted with berths for two, four or six passengers and the austere conditions were justified at the time because of the heavy demand by emigrants to Canada. Damage to the port side caused four of the holds to be flooded, and damaged one of the propellers. But times and requirements had certainly changed.
At the end of the Promenade Deck, was the Gymnasium, which enabled passengers to take a brisk ride on the mechanical horse, scull, try the new ingenious running track (or running machine as we would call it now), or just exercise in the fresh sea air. In August 1942 the Ascania left New Zealand for the UK, sailing via Panama, up the east coast of the USA and across the Atlantic in convoy to Southampton where she was paid off and underwent conversion to an infantry landing ship (LSI). His ship finally arriving in the English port of Southampton, on the 28th April 1958.
