We are dealing with a generation of children that are sensitive and risk averse—children that tend to seek adults to solve their problems and protect them from discomfort. What follows is what inspired me to become an educator, what pushed me out of the classroom, and where I’m heading next. Good parenting, like good teaching, is about mastering the art of balance. We want to make our kids feel safe and protected, but we sometimes overplay our hand. The rest will emerge organically.
